Australia has 3 main time zones with some of the states observing daylight saving time and other states not observing daylight saving time. Victoria, Tasmania, New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory all observe daylight saving time. These states are all in the Australian Eastern Time zone. During standard time, these states are UTC/GMT +10 hours. During daylight saving time, these states are UTC/GMT +11 hours. South Australia also observes daylight saving time but South Australia is located in the Australian Central Time zone. During standard time, South Australia is UTC/GMT +9½ hours. During daylight saving time, South Australia is UTC/GMT +10½ hours. It should be noted that the town of Broken Hill, which is located in New South Wales, is also in the Australian Central Time zone due to the fact it is located next to the border between New South Wales and South Australia. Queensland, the Northern Territory and Western Australia do not observe daylight saving time. Queensland is UTC/GMT +10 hours. The Northern Territory is UTC/GMT +9½ hours. Western Australia has started a 3 years test of daylight saving time in 2006. The test will end in 2009 at which point Western Australia will determine whether or not they wish to continue observing daylight saving time. During standard time, Western Australia is UTC/GMT +8 hours. During daylight saving time, Western Australia is UTC/GMT +9 hours. Please note that a small portion of Western Australia from the town of Caiguna to Eucla to Border Village is UTC/GMT +8 hours 45 minutes. These towns are located close to the border between South Australia and Western Australia with the town of Eucla being almost on the border and the town of Border Village being virtually on the border. These towns are found along the Eyre Highway which connects Western Australia to South Australia. The stretch of road between these towns is famous for being the longest stretch of straight road in Australia. Another town in Western Australia called Giles which is along the border with the Northern Territory uses Australian Central Time, the same time that South Australia uses. Additionally, Lord Howe Island which is part of New South Wales, is UTC/GMT +10½ hours during standard time. During daylight saving time, Lord Howe Island is UTC/GMT +11 hours.
