Comments About... Israel

Prior to 2005, daylight saving time did not start and stop on a set date in Israel. Instead, daylight saving time in Israel was determined by the Rabbinate or by an act of the Knesset (parliament) who essentially set the dates on a yearly basis. As a result, it was difficult to know in advance when the observance of daylight saving time was going to start and end.

In 2005, Israel introduced a set date for the start and stop of daylight saving time.

Daylight saving time will begin on the Friday closest to April 1 of each year.

Daylight saving time will end on the Saturday that is between Rosh Hashana (Jewish New Year’s) and Yom Kippur according to the Jewish calendar.

Jewish New Year’s (Rosh Hashana) does not happen on the same date every year. It fluctuates quite a bit when compared to the Gregorian calendar. This is due to the fact that the Jewish calendar is a combination of both a lunar and solar calendar. A lunar month is slightly longer than a month in a Gregorian calendar. Jewish New Year’s can happen any time from early September to early October. Daylight saving time goes on regular schedule

The Knesset Interior and Environment Committee today approved the regular times by a majority vote.

Daylight saving time will have starting and ending fixed dates from this year. It will begin at 2 am on the Friday closest to April 1, and end on the Saturday night between Rosh Hashana (Jewish New Year’s) and Yom Kippur.

The Knesset Interior and Environment Committee today approved the regular times under a compromise written by MK Chaim Oron (Yahad) on a private members bills by MK David Azoulay (Shas) and MK Eli Aflalo (Likud). Minister of the Interior Ophir Pines–Paz supports the compromise. The Interior Committee amended the Daylight Saving Time Law (2000) in accordance with the compromise, and it will be sent to the Knesset plenum within a few days for its second and third readings.

Under the compromise, daylight savings will begin three weeks earlier than under the proposed private members bill, which called for it to begin on the night after Passover. The compromise retained the date on which daylight saving time ends.

The compromise was passed by a majority. Only Shinui’s representatives on the Interior Committee, former minister of internal affairs Avraham Poraz and MK Erela Golan, voted against. The committee rejected Poraz’s proposal to apply daylight saving from early April until the end of October.
