Even with the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Russian Federation is still
the largest country in the world. The Russian Federation is approximately 1.8
times larger than the US and has an astonishing 17,075,200 sq km of land mass.
To put things into perspective, Canada, the second largest country in the
world has 6 time zones whereas the Russian Federation has 10 time zones.
Administratively, the Russian Federation is divided into 21 republics, 6 krays (federal territories), 2 federal cities, 49 regions, 1 autonomous region and 10 autonomous areas.
For the most part, the time zones within the Russian Federation include many
states, especially the Moscow Time zone.
From west to east (left to right), the time zones of the Russian Federation
are:
Moscow Time:
UTC/GMT +3 hours during standard time (MSST) and UTC/GMT +4 hours during
daylight saving time (MSDT).
The Moscow Time zone includes the most important cities in the Russian
Federation. The Moscow Time zone encompasses a rather large area and the
western part of this time zone could in theory be part of the Samara Time
zone. But, we suspect that many cities and states would prefer to be in the
Moscow Time zone for business reasons, etc, even if they are located on the
very outer limits of this region.
Samara Time:
UTC/GMT +4 hours during standard time (SAMT) and UTC/GMT +5 hours during
daylight saving time (SAMST).
This is a unique time zone in the Russian Federation as it is a very small
area. The Samara Time zone encompasses only 3 states which are Udmurtia, Kirov
and Samara.
Yekaterinburg Time:
UTC/GMT +5 hours during standard time (YEKT) and UTC/GMT +6 hours during
daylight saving time (YEKST).
Omsk Time:
UTC/GMT +6 hours during standard time (OMST) and UTC/GMT +7 hours during
daylight saving time (OMSST).
This time zone includes only the state of Omsk which is located along the
northeastern section of Kazakhstan.
Novosibirsk Time:
UTC/GMT +6 hours during standard time (NOVT) and UTC/GMT +7 hours during
daylight saving time (NOVST).
The Novosibirsk Time zone includes the states of Novosibirsk, Altay
Territory and Altay. These states are just east of Omsk and also border the
northeastern section of Kazakhstan.
Krasnoyarsk Time:
UTC/GMT +7 hours during standard time (KRAT) and UTC/GMT +8 hours during
daylight saving time (KRAST).
Irkutsk Time:
UTC/GMT +8 hours during standard time (IRKT) and UTC/GMT +9 hours during
daylight saving time (IRKST).
This time zone includes the states of Irkutsk and Buryatia.
Yakutsk Time:
UTC/GMT +9 hours during standard time (YAKT) and UTC/GMT +10 hours during
daylight saving time (YAKST).
Although parts of Yakutia are located in two other time zones, as mentioned
below, the Yakutsk Time zone also includes the state of Chita.
Vladivostok Time:
UTC/GMT +10 hours during standard time (VLAT) and UTC/GMT +11 hours during
daylight saving time (VLAST).
Part of Yakutia is located within in this time zone. As a general rule of
thumb, the towns located between 127º E and 140º E Longitude are located
within this time zone.
Additionally, the New Siberian Islands (Novosibirskie Ostrova) which are
located within the East Siberian Sea are also located in this time. These
islands, as you might guess, are sparsely inhabited only by Russians. These
islands are located within Yakutia.
Magadan Time:
UTC/GMT +11 hours during standard time (MAGT) and UTC/GMT +12 hours during
daylight saving time (MAGST).
Part of the state of Yakutia is located within this time zone. Although the
line that defines the time zone separation is not straight, as a general rule
of thumb, the cities and towns located east (to the right) of 140º E
Longitude until you meet the border with the state of Chukot are located in
the Magadan Time zone.
Anadyr’ Time:
UTC/GMT +12 hours during standard time (ANAT) and UTC/GMT +13 hours during
daylight saving time (ANAST).
This includes the state of Chukot and the Kuril Islands which are located
in the Sea of Okhotsk.
Petropavlovsk–Kamchatski Time:
Also UTC/GMT +12 hours during standard time (PETT) and UTC/GMT +13 hours during daylight saving time (PETST).
This time zone includes the two states located in the Kamchatka Peninsula which
are the states of Kamchatka and Korvak.
