Comments About Yukon...

Prior to 1983, the Yukon was GMT/UTC -9 hours during standard time and -8 hours during daylight saving time. This time zone was known as the Yukon Time zone. It was, however, decided in 1983 to move the Yukon to the same time as the province of British Columbia which is in the Pacific Time zone. Such a move helps better co–ordinate flights, shipping, etc. between the Yukon and British Columbia. As a result, the Yukon is now in the Pacific Time zone and is GMT/UTC -8 hours during standard time and -7 hours during daylight saving time.

The Yukon has a population of about 31,000, and its capital is Whitehorse, with a population of 19,000. People from Yukon are known as Yukoners.

The very sparsely populated Yukon abounds with natural scenic beauty, with snowmelt lakes and perennial white capped mountains. Although the climate is arctic to sub–arctic and very dry, with long cold winters, the long sunshine hours in the short summer allow hardy crops and vegetables, along with a profusion of flowers, to blossom and fruit.

The Yukon became world famous in August 1896 when gold was found. The result was the Klondike Gold Rush.

The Yukon is also famous for the Dawson City Nuggets, a hockey team, which in 1905 travelled 4,000 miles by dog sled, canoe, hiking, ship and train to challenge the Ottawa Senators for the Stanley Cup. Unfortunately, the Dawson City Nuggets only arrived one day prior to the start of the series and were exhausted. In game two of the series, the Nuggets lost 23 — 2. Despite the loss, the Nuggets have earned their spot in history for travelling so far and under such harsh conditions just to play for the Stanley Cup.
