Alaska Time encompasses the entire state except for the far reaches of the Aleutian Islands and St. Laurence Island which are located in the Hawaiian–Aleutian Time Zone. The Aleutian Islands, west (left) of Umnak Island (home to Nikolski village), are located in the Hawaiian–Aleutian Time zone. Umnak Island itself though is located in the Alaska Time zone. The Pribilof Islands, which include St. Paul Island and St. George Island, are essentially directly north of Umnak Island. These islands are located in the Alaska Time zone. Settlements found in the Hawaii–Aleutian Time zone include Atka, Adak, Attu and Shemya. Although Alaska has two time zones there is one small exception to this rule which applies to the town of Hyder. The town of Hyder is situated in the Portland Canal and is located in the Pacific Time zone. Hyder is one of the most eastern located towns in Alaska, if not the most, making it a good candidate to observe Pacific Time. But more importantly, Hyder is only accessible through the town of Stewart, British Columbia, Canada, which is about 3 kilometers away. These two towns are very interconnected. As a result, Hyder observes Pacific Time so it is in harmony with Stewart. Hyder is a unique town, not just because it is located in the Pacific Time zone, but also because although it is located in Alaska, USA, it is so interconnected with British Columbia, Canada, that Hyder does not use the US currency. The town of Hyder uses the Canadian currency. The International Date Line runs between Alaska and Russia. Although the International Date Line traditionally runs along 180° longitude, the date line does swing east (to the right) and runs along 169° longitude and as a result, the International Date Line runs between Little Diomede Island (US) and Big Diomede Island (Russia) which are found in the Bering Strait. After the International Date Line runs through the Diomede Islands, the date line swings westward again (to the left) and goes over the top of St. Laurence Island and ultimately goes around Attu Island of the Aleutian Islands chain. This allows all of Alaska to be on the same day at the rest of North America.
